I began to learn about painting under the tutelage of Richard Baker & Eric Geddes in Winchester in the early 1980s. This early work was influenced by the experience and reaction to spatial effects created by the vertical nature of trees, and how these effects can disorientate, create a sense of movement as well as, seemingly in a contradictory way, create a feeling of absolute stillness. I love the way Art can still us, in the same way nature can. Currently my work is focussing on old panels, particularly ones I discovered in Umbrian hill-top towns. I had no idea what the connection between these and my previous work might be, but I became quite obsessive about studying them, and experimenting with the essence of these beautiful objects to see where it takes me. Some connections to my earlier work are appearing. The current work is bigger, and nearer to the actual scale of the panels that inspired them.
Looking ahead I’m planning to explore the nature of vertical, diagonal & horizontal lines, and their interaction with the space around them. This third motif has arisen out of an interest in the large cranes used to build large urban buildings, and, to some extent, the common visual connections between these and bridges. More Info >
